Abstract
The present Act sets out the Danish legal framework for the protection and sustainable management of wildlife and hunting practices. Its primary aim is to ensure biodiversity through ethical and ecologically responsible regulation of hunting and the conservation of habitats. The law applies to all wild mammals and birds, including migratory species and introduced populations that have established themselves in the wild. It provides rules for hunting seasons, the use of weapons, restrictions on hunting near residential areas and public roads, and mandates that only individuals with a valid hunting license may participate in hunting activities.
The law also outlines the responsibilities of the Ministry of Environment, which include establishing wildlife reserves, issuing regulations, monitoring species, and ensuring public compliance. There are provisions for the creation of a Wildlife Management Council, rules on landowners’ hunting rights, and regulations for dealing with wildlife damage and environmental harm to protected species or habitats. The act also addresses enforcement, sanctions for violations, and sets out the framework for cooperation with EU and international environmental directives.
This Act consists of 9 Chapters and 2 Appendices: Purpose (1), General wildlife management provisions (2); Hunting Rights (3); Exercising Hunting Rights (4); Wildlife reserves (5); Wildlife damage (6); Hunting Licenses (7); Administration (8); Environmental damages to protected species or habitats (8a); Penalties (9). Appendix 1 - Mammals covered by Article 9a, section 1. Appendix 2 - Mammals covered by art. 9a, sect. 2.
