Abstract
The Act regulates various aspects of registration of ships under the Fiji flag and navigation
The 230 sections are divided into 13 Parts: Preliminary (I); National colours and national character of Fiji (II); Registration of vessels (III); safety (IV); Seamen (V); Coasting trade (VI); navigational aids (VII); Fishing vessels, small craft and air cushioned vessels (VIII); Marine rights and liabilities (IX); Pilotage (X); General (XI); Legal proceedings (XII); Repeal and transitional (XIII).
Sections 3 and 4 define the application sphere of the Act. Section 5 contains definitions. Section 13 sets out conditions of registration of vessels. The Director of Marine shall be the Registrar of Vessels (sect. 16). Section 19 concerns the Register of Vessels to be kept in Suva. Sections 22 to 54 contain provisions relative to registration of vessels and acts relating to vessels of Fiji in the register. The Minister may, by Order, provide that any provisions of Parts IV and V shall apply to fishing vessels with such modifications as specified in the Order, but the Minister may also exempt fishing vessel from provisions of Parts IV,V or VIII. The Minister may also make regulations relative to design, equipment and manning of fishing vessels under section 169.
