Abstract
This Law establishes the competent bodies and the tasks of the competent bodies, the obligations of subjects in the food business, official controls, and prescribes administrative measures and misdemeanor provisions. This Law also ensures the implementation of several acts of the European Union (see article 2, paragraph 1). The Law further transposes into the legal order of the Republic of Croatia the provisions of the Directive 2008/97/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 19 November 2008 amending Council Directive 96/22/EC concerning the prohibition on the use in stockfarming of certain substances having a hormonal or thyrostatic action and of beta-agonists.
This text regulates different food hygiene and microbiological criteria related topics and issues, such as: direct placing of food on the market (internal and international trade also), good practices, labelling requirements and special hygiene rules for food of animal origin, establishment and implementation of procedures based on the principles of the HACCP system, registration and approval of food production and processing facilities, monitoring of residues in food of animal origin, quick frozen food, deviation from microbiological criteria, administrative supervision and implementation of official controls, and rules governing powers of persons authorized to carry out designated official controls. The Law is divided into eight main thematic Chapters and a total of 32 articles. Titles of Chapters are as follows: I. General provisions; II. Competent authorities; III. Obligations of entities in food business; IV. Procedures in case of unsatisfactory results; V. Administrative supervision; VI. Official controls; VII. Penalty provisions; VIII. Transitional and final provisions.

Entry into force notes
This text entered into force eight days after its publication in the Official Gazette (published on 18 July 2022), except for articles 23, 24 and 25 which shall enter into force on the day of the introduction of euro as the official currency in the Republic of Croatia. The provisions of articles 20, 21 and 22 of this Law will cease to be valid on the date of introduction of euro as the official currency in the Republic of Croatia.
