Abstract
The production of seeds for trade purposes is subject to the issuance of an authorization by the president of the competent Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture. The Act classifies the seeds and the propagating material into categories, on the basis of which different requirements and quality standards are established. Furthermore, the Act states all the information required in the labels, including, inter alia, the year of production, the weight, the name of the species, and any other information relevant to the characteristics and usage of the product. The imports of seeds from other countries is subject to the application of the present provisions, provided that the obligations deriving from international agreements are complied with. This Act provides also for the creation of a "register of varieties", with a view to ensure the identification of each variety and establishes the conditions for the registration or withdrawal. Final provisions state the penalties to be inflicted in case of contravention.
