Abstract
The present Act lays down provisions relating to animal health in the province of Alberta. The text consists of 79 articles divided into 16 Parts as follows: Interpretation (1); Administration (2); Reporting and examination (3); Quarantine (4); Surveillance zone (5); Destruction and compensation (6); Control zones (7); Inspections (8); Licences (9); Appeals (10); Records (11); Collection, use and disclosure of information (12); General (13); Offences and penalties (14); Regulations (15); Transitional provisions, consequential amendments, repeal and coming into force (16). One Schedule is enclosed.
The Act contains several provisions on food safety and quality, as it regulates as well the processing and handling of "animal product” defined as, without limitation, butter, cheese, cream, milk, eggs, meat, ova, semen and antlers. Provisions include examination powers on the chief provincial veterinarian of dead animals if there is a suspect that the animal's products are contaminated; quarantine orders and discipline, destruction or disposal of animal product; inspection of vehicles, railway cars, aircraft, watercraft and premises. The Act also sets record requirements to be respected by owners and encourages the Minister ton use any information collected under Part 12 to establish a traceability system that will allow as well to track the movement of animal products.
