Abstract
The present Directive lays down some amendments to Directive 1999/32/EC, which sets out the maximum permitted sulphur content of heavy fuel, gas oil and marine gas oil used within the European Community. The aim is to widen the scope of the Directive above-mentioned, taking into account that emissions from shipping due to the combustion of marine fuels with high sulphur content contribute to air pollution in the form of sulphur dioxide and particulate matter, harming human health and damaging the environment. Article 1(2) is replaced and shall read as follows: “Reductions in emissions of sulphur-dioxide resulting from the combustion of certain petroleum-derived liquid fuels shall be achieved by imposing limits on the sulphur content of such fuels as a condition for their use within Member States' territory, territorial seas and exclusive exonomic zones or pollution control zones.”
