Abstract
This Directive implements within the European Community a port State control system. It sets out common criteria for control of ships by the port State and lays down harmonized procedures on inspection and detention. The aim is to increase compliance with international and relevant European Union legislation on maritime safety, maritime security and protection of the marine environment.
