Abstract
This Act establishes the National Shipping Board and provides for its composition, powers and functions, and makes provision for the registration, survey and marking of Indian ships, and for matters related to navigation.
A Shipping Development Fund and Shipping Development Fund Committee shall also be established.
The Act contains provisions on civil liability for oil pollution damage and on the prevention and containment of pollution of the sea by oil in accordance with the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution of the Sea by Oil, 1954.
The text further provides for the following matters: containment of accidental pollution; nuclear ships; collisions, accidents at sea and liability; limitation of liabilities; penalties.
