Abstract
The Act consist of 37 sections, divided into 10 Chapters: General provisions (I); Special provisions relative to domestic animals and tame reindeer (II); Special provisions relative to fish and shellfish (III); Advertisements with animals (IV) Animal home, trade in animals, hiring out of animals (V); Use of animals in research or education (VI); Animal protection associations - supervision and initiatives (VII); Miscellaneous provisions (VIII); Penal provisions (IX); Entry into force (X).
The Act applies to all living marine mammals, birds, toads, frogs, salamanders, reptiles, fish and shellfish (in accordance with the EEA Agreement). Section 5 deals briefly with genetic engineering. Section 14 prohibits the use of certain gear for fishing. Chapter VI also regulates animal testing. Each local authority shall appoint an Animal Welfare Board which shall assist the police in ensuring compliance with this Act.
