Abstract
The objective of this Directive is to introduce the minimum Community measures for the control of classical swine fever. As required under article 3, Member States shall ensure that the presence and suspected presence of classical swine fever are compulsorily and immediately notified to the competent authority. Moreover, the Member State in whose territory classical swine fever is confirmed shall give notification of the disease to the Commission and to the other Member States by following Annex I hereto, which specifies the information to be provided. Articles 4 to 6 establish measures to be taken in case of suspicion and in case of confirmation of the presence of classical swine fever in pigs on a holding, whereas article 14 establishes measures applicable in case of suspicion and confirmation of the presence of classical swine fever in pigs in a slaughterhouse or means of transport. Article 8 concerns the epidemiological enquiry to be carried out by Member States. Without any delay after the official confirmation of the presence of classical swine fever on a holding, the competent authority of the Member State concerned shall establish a protection zone with a radius of at least 3 kilometres around the outbreak site. The protection zone shall be included in a wider surveillance zone. The measures referred to in articles 10 and 11 shall be applied in the protection and surveillance zones respectively. Article 12 deals with cleaning and disinfection. Additionally, Annex II lays down principles and describes the procedures to be followed when cleaning and disinfecting. Article 13 provides for the repopulation of pig holdings following disease outbreaks. Articles 18 to 20 concern vaccination.
