Abstract
The present Regulation lays down a framework for the traceability of products consisting of or containing genetically modified organisms (GMOs), and food and feed produced from GMOs, with a view to facilitating accurate labelling, monitoring the effects on the environment and human health and at the same time providing for the implementation of the appropriate risk management measures inlcuding, if necessary, withdrawal of products. At the first stage of the placing on the market of the aforementioned products, operators shall ensure that the following information is transmitted in writing to the operator receiving the product: (a) that they contain or consist of GMOs; (b) the unique identifier(s) assigned to those GMOs in accordance with article 8. Part B of article 4 regards labelling. Further, article 5 defines the traceability system to be applied to food and feed produced from GMOs. Article 9 deals with inspection and control measures.

Entry into force notes
The Regulation shall enter into force on 17 November 2003. However, articles 1 to 7 as well as article 9 (1) shall apply with effect from 18 January 2004.
