Abstract
The Ministry of Environment and Forestry shall: (i) define principles and policies on environment protection, preventing and limiting pollution and rational use of natural resources; (ii) define and apply environmental standards in collaboration with the Institute of Turkish Standards; (iii) supervise and inspect all activities so as to prevent wastes, fuel as and other pollutants damaging the ecosystem and carry out Environmental Impact Assessment; (iv) ensure protection, rehabilitation, improvement and maintenance of forests and developing forest cadastre; (v) prepare and arrange general afforestation plans; (vi) take all necessary measures to prevent erosion; (vii) improve agro-forestry, reclaim pastures, summer pastures and winter pastures and manage grazing plans; (viii) define, manage, protect, improve, and operate natural parks, nature parks, nature monuments, protection sites, bio-diversity and wild life. The organizational chart is given and defined in details. The Ministry is headed by the Minister of Environment and Forestry, assisted by an undersecretary and four of his/her deputies. The main departments are: (a) General Directorate of Environmental Management; (b) General Directorate of Environmental Impact Assessment and Planning; (c) General Directorate of Afforestation and Erosion Control; (d) General Directorate of Forest-Village Relations; (e) General Directorate of Nature Protection and Natural Parks; (f) Research and Development Division; (g) External Affairs and EU Division; and (h) Training and Publication Division. Functions of each department are given in details. The Ministry also has four boards to accomplish duties which are defined in separate Regulations. These boards are: (i) Supreme Environment Board; (ii) Local Environment Boards; (iii) Environment and Forestry Assembly; and (iv) Central Game Committee.
