Abstract
With a view to ensuring a more systematic approach in the legislation governing spirit drinks, this Regulation sets out criteria for the production, description, presentation and labelling of spirit drinks. Furthermore, it lays down rules on the protection of geographical indications. These provisions apply to all spirit drinks placed on the market in the European Community (including those imported from third countries) as well as to those produced in the European Community for export. The application scope also covers the use of ethyl alcohol or distillates of agricultural origin in the production of alcoholic beverages and the use of the names of spirit drinks in the presentation and labelling of foodstuffs.
