Abstract
This Act provides for the reorganisation of the state of Jammu and Kashmir into Union territory of Jammu and Kashmir and the Union territory of Ladakh. Part II of the Act forms a new Union Territory of Ladakh (Ladakh) comprising of Kargil and Leh districts of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir. The remaining territories of the state of Jammu and Kashmir form the new Union territory of Jammu and Kashmir.
Part III of the Act provides for the representation in legislatures and delimitation of constituencies for both Union territories. It also makes provisions for the Lieutenant Governor, Assembly, and Council of Ministers for the Union territory of for Jammu and Kashmir. Part IV provides for administration of Union territory of Ladakh. The Act also contains provisions in respect of the High Court, distribution of revenues, apportionment of assets and liabilities, administrative services and other incidental matters.
In the fifth schedule to the Act, table 1 contains the list of central laws that are made applicable to both the Union territories; table 2 contains state laws which are amended; table 3 lists the state laws that are repealed; and table 4 provides the state laws that continue to remain in force in both the Union territories.
