Abstract
This Regulation establishes the European Fisheries Fund and defines the framework for Community support for the sustainable development of the fisheries sector, fisheries areas and inland fishing. For the purposes of the Regulation, support to the fisheries sector involves all activities of production, processing and marketing of fisheries and aquaculture products. The main aims pursued are the following: (a) to support the common fisheries policy so as to ensure exploitation of living aquatic resources; (b) to support aquaculture in order to provide sustainability in economic, environmental and social terms; (c) to promote a sustainable balance between resources and the fishing capacity of the Community fishing fleet; (d) to promote a sustainable development of inland fishing; (e) to strengthen the competitiveness of the operating structures and the development of economically viable enterprises in the fisheries sector; (e) to foster the protection and the enhancement of the environment and natural resources related to the fisheries sector; g) promote equality between men and women in the development of the fisheries sector and fisheries areas.
