Abstract

The Minister may, by Order to be published in the Gazette, declare as "reserved forests" (a) lands resumed by the State according to the Lands Resumption Ordinance; (b) lands that have been declared to be property of the State; (c) lands that have been acquired by the State for public purposes. Sections 6 and 7 establish the acts that are prohibited in a reserved forest (among others, trespassing of cattle, poisoning of water, destruction of trees, hunting). Moreover, the Ministry may constitute any portion of forest a "village forest" for the benefit of any village community or group of village communities. All trees enumerated in Schedule I in a village forest shall be deemed to be property of the State (sect. 13); all trees of the species specified in Schedule II in any forest shall be deemed to be reserved trees, the cutting, marking, girdling, destruction of which (except as provided by rules made by the Minister in that respect) are prohibited according to section 19.
The Minister may make regulations on the protection and conservation of reserved forests, as well as the transit of all forest produce by land or water. The Minister may also delegate the control of reserved forests to a Conservator of Forests, appointed according to the provisions of section 58.
