Abstract
The purpose of this Act is to consolidate the laws relating to food and to regulate the manufacture, storage, distribution, sale and import of food.
The Act provides for the establishment of the Food Safety and Standards Authority (FSSA) in order to regulate the food sector and ensure safe and wholesome food. The Authority will be aided by several scientific panels and a central advisory committee to lay down standards for food safety which shall include specifications for ingredients, contaminants, pesticide residue, biological hazards and labels. The Food Authority shall consist of a Chairperson and the following twenty-two members out of which one-third shall be women.
Every entity in the food sector shall be required to get a licence or a registration, which will be issued by local authorities.
State Commissioners of Food Safety and other local level officials will enforce the law.
The Act further provides for the following matters: recognition and accreditation of laboratories, research institutions, food analysts; offences and penalties; finances, accounts audits and reports of the Food Authority; and provisions of miscellaneous nature.
