Abstract
This Act provides for various matters relative to food safety and hygiene, food production, trade in food, and administration of these matters. The Act consists of 8 Chapters divided into 78 sections, of transitory provisions, and of 1 Schedule listing licence fees.
Food shall mean meat products, beverages, stimulants, meant to be consumed by human beings and excludes medical products. Chapter 1 establishes a Food Commission and defines its powers and duties. A licence is required for production, sale, and import of food as provided for in Chapter 2. The holder of a licence must produce or sell food in accordance with the conditions set out in Chapter 3. Chapter 4 prohibits the production, import, sale, or distribution of the following: impure food; adulterated food; food that does not meet the standards prescribed by the Minister, etc. A product licence shall be issued by the authority in order to produce or import controlled food (Chapter 5). Competent officers shall have the power to inspect and seize food which does not comply with the quality and standards set by the Minister (Chapter 6). The authority shall have the power to order the suspension or revocation of a licence as provided for in Chapter 7. Chapter 8 contains penal provisions.
