Abstract
This Law sets forth the legislative framework relevant to veterinary services and prevention of animal diseases. The aim is to protect public health and ensure safety of foodstuffs of animal origin for human consumption by guaranteeing animal health. To this end, the Law lays down detailed provisions dealing with: prevention of infectious animal diseases and measures to be applied in case of detection of such diseases; rights and obligations of holders and keepers of animals as regards animal health; veterinary inspections to be carried out in farms and establishments where animals are kept; identification of animals (ear marking) and registration of movements of animals; suitability of feedstuffs; prophylaxis in animal reproduction. Further provisions apply to marketing of animals and animal products as regards compliance with sanitary conditions (inspection, veterinary health certification, transport conditions). Moreover, the Law sets out measures to protect the environment and public health against hazards and pollution caused by activities related to animal breeding and processing of food of animal origin, particularly as regards disposal of waste arising from those activities. Final provisions regard: fees to be paid to public authorities providing veterinary services; membership and functions of the Veterinary Chamber; setting up of veterinary organizations; advisory functions of the Veterinary Council; setting up of a veterinary information system; penalties to be applied in case of infringement of these provisions.
