Abstract
This Law sets out the fundamentals for ensuring a high level of protection of human health and consumer interests related to food, taking into account the particular differences in the supply of food, including traditional products, while ensuring the efficient functioning of markets.
This Law establishes the basic principles, the scientific basis, effective organizational structures and processes that support decisions related to food and animal foodstuff.
This Law shall apply to all stages of production, processing and distribution of food and feed, in addition to primary production for private domestic use or for the preparation, handling and storage of food for private consumption in the household.
For the purposes of this Law, food is any substance or product, processed, partially processed or unprocessed, intended for consumption or that can be reasonably expected to be consumed by humans.
In order to achieve its objectives the Law regulates the following: a) general provisions of food Act; b) Croatian Food Agency; c) the system of rapid alert, emergency measures and crisis management; d) food hygiene; e) official control; f) new food, genetically modified food and genetically modified feed; g) quality of food and feed; h) markings traditional specialty foods, authenticity and geographical origin of food; i) duties and responsibilities of the authority.
This Law is divided into 12 Chapters and 137 articles.

Entry into force notes
This Law enters into force eight days after its publication in the Official Gazette, except the provisions of article 57 paragraph 5 and article 77 which shall enter into force on the day of Croatian accession to the European Union.
